| ichael Jaffe called to reschedule his appointment at Lasik Vision in Garden
City, N.Y., a routine follow-up to the vision-correcting surgery he
underwent in January.
The recorded message still started with a cheery greeting, but went on to
say there was no one to pick up the phone: Due to circumstances beyond our
control, we are unable to take your call or to see patients at the Garden
City office. This may be a permanent arrangement.
In the corporate world of laser eye surgery, some patients are now
experiencing a new complication: that the clinic suddenly goes out of
business.
Its unconscionable a corporate entity would do this, said Glenn Hagele,
executive director for the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance.
Many Lasik Vision patients have scrambled to look for new doctors, at
additional cost, Mr. Hagele said.
Selecting an eye surgeon is no longer just a matter of weighing the
surgeons expertise and cost. You may want to look at the current stock
price of that corpora. |
| It used to be thought that only about 5 percent of people get dry eye
after LASIK surgery, but no statements were ever made about whether it
was long- or short-term, says Battat. |
| The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Lasik (Laser
Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) procedure in 1987. Between 1.4
million and 2 million Americans underwent the procedure last year
alone. |
| I also question your claims about having the most fellowship-trained
cornea specialists than any other group in Canada (7), as well as far
more academic affiliated ophthalmologists. It doesnt surprise me
that your group is growing rapidly. Where else would/could a former
Lasik Vision, Icon, or other discount surgery doctor work? However,
if youre so busy, why do you have so much time posting on this and
other boards during business hours? |
| We were forced by market pressure to bring down the price to $1,500
and on rare occasions we have offered $499 for test purposes. If all
procedures were $750, we would lose money. Im not trying to defend
Lasik Vision because what I think theyve done to the market is
horrible, but I know their doctors werent compromising patient care. |
